THE RUBBER-KEYED WONDER: THE SINCLAIR ZX SPECTRUM STORY
CELEBRATING THE 45TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SINCLAIR ZX SPECTRUM (1982 - 2027)

About the Book
As a companion piece to The Rubber-Keyed Wonder Documentary Movie and to celebrate the ZX Spectrum's 45th Anniversary, we have documented the story of the iconic 80s computer that changed everything for a generation of programmers, game developers and players, all brought together for the first time in one beautifully crafted book!
The Rubber-Keyed Wonder: The Sinclair ZX Spectrum Story is a premium illustrated volume celebrating one of the most important home computers ever made, the machine that helped define a generation of British gaming, inspired countless bedroom coders, and played a huge role in creating the UK games industry as we know it today!

This book tells the full story
Written by respected games historian and documentary creator Kim Justice, The Rubber-Keyed Wonder Book combines detailed research, archive imagery, original commentary, and contributions from many people connected to the ZX Spectrum’s story. The book explores the people, the games, the companies, the magazines, the coders, the artists and the communities that turned the ZX Spectrum home computer into a cultural icon.
However, this isn't simply a technical history of a piece of 1980s hardware that started in Cambridge and went on to selling millions of units. This is the story of the people who surrounded it, from the programmers working from bedrooms, the publishers taking risks on unknown teenage developers, the artists creating unforgettable worlds one pixel at a time, the magazine writers and journalists who built a community, and the players who simply spent hours waiting for a game to load from cassette.

What's already in this book?
The planned book is approximately 204+ pages (without stretch goals), split into two major sections.
The first part is a history of the ZX Spectrum, beginning with Clive Sinclair’s early career at Sinclair Radionics, the ZX80 and ZX81, and the creation of the ZX Spectrum itself. The book then follows the machine’s launch, its competition with systems that include the Commodore 64, BBC Micro and Amstrad CPC, the rise of bedroom coders, the huge boom in ZX Spectrum games publishing, the 128K era, Sinclair’s fall, Amstrad’s ownership, international clones, and the modern legacy of the Spectrum through projects such as the ZX Spectrum Next. The whole thing!
The story moves from Sinclair's early ambitions as an inventor and innovator and the birth of affordable home computing, to the extraordinary explosion of computer games software that followed. It explores the people who turned bedrooms into development studios, the publishers who discovered this new generation of talent, and the magazines that connected an emerging community.

A Story for Generations
The book follows the ZX Spectrum into its later life, including international clones, preservation, and modern homebrew development and huge projects such as theZX Spectrum Next, whichshows how a computer released in 1982 continues to inspire people over four decades later!
The second part of the book focuses on 48 games that define the ZX Spectrum, presented chronologically across the machine’s life and legacy. From early classics such as Football Manager, The Hobbit, Ant Attack, Jetpac and Manic Miner, through to later icons including RoboCop, Chase H.Q., Fantasy World Dizzy and modern ZX Spectrum releases, this section celebrates the games that shaped the machine’s reputation and the memories of those who played them.
